Biography

A gifted, unpredictable attacker who wears Mexico’s number 10, Alexis Vega blends dribbling, set-piece quality and big-game presence. On his day he is one of Mexico’s most decisive players, capable of settling a match with a single individual moment.

He came through the Chivas academy, debuting very young and quickly flashing an uncommon talent: pace, close control and a knack for arriving in the box that few Chivas academy graduates had shown in recent years. For a while he seemed destined to become the club’s next great star.

It wasn’t always this way, though. In his final months at Chivas he honestly admitted he wasn’t enjoying his football and that his fitness was holding him back — a grey spell that even included a disciplinary suspension. It was a moment when his future, at both club and national-team level, was genuinely in doubt.

The move to Toluca transformed him completely: he shed several kilos, regained his discipline and rediscovered his joy on the pitch. The new coaching staff gave him back minutes, confidence and, above all, the feeling of playing for love of the game rather than obligation.

Reborn, he led Toluca to the top of Liga MX with back-to-back titles, becoming the emblem of a team that stopped being a supporting act and started fighting for everything. That resurgence also won back his place with El Tri, with whom he had already amassed more than fifty caps and played at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

His recent chapter is a reminder that reinventing yourself in time is a form of talent too. Tonight, with England the opponent at the Azteca, Vega arrives carrying the weight of the number 10 and the urgency of providing the kind of unpredictability only he can offer.
