Biography

A product of the Santos Laguna academy and now its captain, Carlos Acevedo is regarded as one of Liga MX’s finest shot-stoppers for his reflexes and bravery between the posts.

His career nearly ended before it began: as a youngster he was almost cut for being too short — he was once told he’d only make it as a hotel doorman — until an unlucky injury to teammates in his age group opened a door he never let go of. In time, he also grew to 1.85 m, a physical change he matched with an obsessive attention to detail: positioning, reflexes and distribution with his feet.

That work turned him into an undisputed starter in Torreón, where he has guarded Santos Laguna’s goal in moments of real pressure and learned to read entire matches without losing focus — a virtue the most demanding coaches prize in a goalkeeper. In time, the dressing room also handed him the captain’s armband, a nod to his quiet leadership as much as to his experience.

Consistent and dependable, he has been a mainstay and a champion with Santos, and after years of waiting he reclaimed his place in the national team — a return he lived with the humility of someone who never stopped preparing even as the call took its time arriving.

He arrives at the World Cup as a reliable alternative in a fiercely contested Mexican goalkeeping department, aware that his job is measured as much in training sessions as in whatever minutes eventually come his way. Being a top-class backup in a tournament Mexico is hosting doesn’t weigh on him: he knows a goalkeeper also delivers value by pushing the starter to be his best.

"When I got the call to come back, I said: I can do this," sums up his mindset — the same conviction with which he awaits his chance tonight at the Azteca against England, should the match come to need him.
