Biography

Mexico’s captain is a defensive midfielder who also performs at centre-back — a leader on and off the pitch. Developed at América, he established himself in Europe with Ajax, where he won two Eredivisie titles, then West Ham and Fenerbahçe, and is now closing in on one hundred caps.

He has been "Machín" since childhood, a nickname from his older brother because he never feared taking on bigger opponents. He had to prove it early: as a teenager he was rejected by Pachuca’s academy for being too small, and in his formative years at América he commuted three to four hours a day, spending much of his wage on transport just so he’d never miss a session.

That stubbornness carried him to the top. He was named the best player of the 2025 Gold Cup and is the competitive heart of the dressing room — the one who organizes, rallies and fronts up when a match turns against them.

His commitment was clear in the build-up to this World Cup: he underwent ankle surgery in February to make it in time. Everything in his career has been earned through persistence, and now he leads it from the armband.

As a player, Álvarez is a rarity: a "five" with the physical presence to play centre-back and the positional intelligence to shield the defence from midfield, equally capable of anticipating crosses and winning aerial duels in both boxes. That dual role has given Aguirre a flexible piece to adapt the system to any opponent, and given Edson a tactical responsibility few captains carry.

At this World Cup he has captained Mexico through an unbeaten Group A campaign and the historic 2-0 win over Ecuador that delivered the country’s first knockout-stage victory in nearly four decades. Tonight, in the round of 16 against England at the Azteca, he will once again be first out of the tunnel, armband in hand, to lead the biggest match of his generation.
