Biography

A left-footed, box-to-box midfielder with one of the best long-range strikes in Mexican football, Luis Chávez left his mark on Qatar 2022 with a stunning free kick against Saudi Arabia — the most powerful shot of that group stage.

His physical range is notable for a midfielder with so much attacking output: he covers ground relentlessly, drops in to help out of possession, and still gets forward to test his luck from outside the box. That ability to influence both penalty areas makes him a complete midfielder, a rare profile in Mexican football.

A champion with Pachuca, he made a bold call to reach Europe: he paid his own release clause out of pocket to join Dynamo Moscow and become the first Mexican to play in the Russian league, well off his compatriots’ usual routes. It was a personal gamble, taken almost alone, that placed him in a footballing environment unlike anything a Mexican player had experienced before.

His resolve was tested in 2025, when a serious injury sidelined him for months and cast doubt on his World Cup. He raced the clock to recover, living with the constant uncertainty of not knowing whether he would make it in time, until he finally earned his place in the squad.

That recovery process forced him to rethink his physical preparation and lean on patience, a virtue not often associated with a player of his competitive temperament. He returned with the same danger from set pieces as ever, though still working to fully recapture the match sharpness lost during the layoff.

At the World Cup Mexico is co-hosting, with Aguirre in charge and Álvarez as captain, he brings running power, character and constant set-piece danger to a team that closed the group stage without conceding and then eliminated Ecuador 2-0 to reach a knockout round it hadn’t played since 1986. Tonight, against England at the Azteca, his long-range threat remains one of the few sources of goals Mexico has from outside the box.
