Biography

An elegant, versatile midfielder, Luis Romo can play as a holder, a box-to-box man or even a centre-back, and strikes venomously from distance. That versatility has made him a prized asset for any coach, able to solve a match from different positions without losing his identity.

His career is a lesson in perseverance. At 15 he was cut by his boyhood club, Cruz Azul, deemed not good enough — a verdict that could have closed his story before it began.

He rebuilt himself away from the spotlight at Querétaro under Víctor Manuel Vucetich, a demanding coach who instilled in him the tactical rigor and professionalism that define him today. Those were years of anonymous work, without the pressure of a big club, in which he forged the game intelligence that now sets him apart in midfield.

Years later he returned to La Máquina to star in the 2021 title, the club’s first in 23 years, closing a historic drought with the very shirt that had once let him go. From there he moved to Monterrey and then Chivas, all the while a national-team regular, racking up more than sixty appearances for El Tri and chipping in goals from midfield.

An Olympic bronze medallist at Tokyo 2020, he was part of that golden generation that brought Mexico a medal after years of waiting. He now runs the midfield with the same calm he showed rebuilding himself as a teenager, providing balance, clean buildup play and late runs into the box.

Few better embody the idea that a well-timed "no" can be the start of the best story. With England the opponent tonight at the Azteca, Romo arrives as one of the squad’s most experienced players, ready to take the extra step others struggle to find.
