Biography

"El Maguito" Pineda is a small, skilful, unbalancing attacking midfielder — a champion with both Chivas and Cruz Azul — who found his best form in Greece with AEK Athens. He offers the final pass, driving runs between the lines and goals arriving from deep.

His game is defined by tight close control, sudden changes of pace and a quiet run into the box that catches opponents off guard just when they least expect it. He isn’t a box-to-box midfielder but a player of the precise instant — the pass that splits lines, the shot nobody saw coming.

His starting point could hardly be further from the great stadiums. He grew up on a remote ranch in Guerrero, reached by dirt roads and with no phone signal, between farm work and village tournaments.

At 16, a scout took him to Querétaro and changed his life. From there he jumped to Chivas, where he established himself as a starter and won titles with the club he grew up supporting, and later to Cruz Azul, where he added more silverware before testing himself in European football.

In Greece, with AEK Athens, he blossomed away from the Mexican spotlight: there he built a career of multi-million transfers and more than ninety caps, plus the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. His journey — "from the ranch to Greece and the national team" — is among the most endearing in the squad.

Today, with more World Cup experience than almost anyone in the dressing room, he is one of Aguirre’s trusted pieces to hold the midfield together in difficult moments. That story explains the hunger with which he still plays, even at a World Cup Mexico is hosting at home, one that pits him against England tonight in the round of 16.
