Biography

"Piojo" Alvarado — a nickname inherited from his idol Claudio López — is a creative, technically gifted winger and a focal point of Chivas’ attack. He can play on either flank or as a number ten, beating his man as easily as he sets up a teammate; his ability to run straight at defenders and his eye for the final pass make him an invaluable attacking option.

A precocious talent, he made his professional debut at 15 with Celaya, guided by his father, who drove him to the trials and believed in his talent before anyone else did. Those formative years, far from the capital’s spotlight, shaped a hungry footballer with no fear of the stage, one capable of shouldering responsibilities beyond his years.

His next stop, Cruz Azul, cemented his standing: he was an important piece of the 2021 title that ended a 24-year drought and unleashed a historic celebration among La Máquina’s faithful. That championship was less a trophy than a collective release, and Alvarado — young but already decisive — emerged from it with the prestige of having helped write a page Cruz Azul supporters had waited generations for.

He then returned to Chivas, the club of his heart, and added an Olympic bronze medal with Mexico at Tokyo 2020, another chapter confirming his place among a generation of Mexican footballers destined for a bigger leap. Back at the Rebaño he reclaimed a starring role, becoming the go-to winger for a demanding fan base.

Off the pitch he came through a very hard blow: in 2021, on the eve of a final, he and his wife Dayana lost the baby girl they were expecting. Fans rallied around them under the hashtag #FuerzaPiojo, a collective embrace he still recalls with gratitude, and the following year their daughter Emily was born, bringing the family’s smile back and giving him an even greater reason to keep playing with his heart on his sleeve.

On the pitch he remains a joyful, decisive footballer. At this World Cup he started on the left in the historic victory over Ecuador — Mexico’s first knockout-stage win since 1986 — providing width and the final pass, and tonight he takes the field again from the start at the Azteca to face England, carrying the intact hope of an entire country.
