Biography
Known as "El Cachorro", Montes is a tall, aerially dominant centre-back with a ball-playing elegance rare for his size. He emerged at Monterrey — where he had the honour of scoring the first goal in the history of Estadio BBVA — and moved to Europe with Espanyol and Almería before joining Lokomotiv Moscow.
As a boy in Hermosillo his sport was baseball, until watching his idol Rafael Márquez drew him to football. The path wasn’t straight: as a teenager he walked away from the game for about eighteen months, discouraged, and it was his father who convinced him to return and grind his way back up through the lower divisions.
That stubborn streak defines him. He has ridden out suspensions and controversies — including a lengthy ban after an on-field altercation in Europe — without losing his place, and established himself as one of El Tri’s reference centre-backs.
At this World Cup he lived the whole script: he captained Mexico in the opener, was sent off and missed a match, then returned to the lineup to anchor the defence in the win over Ecuador. His story is that of a defender who always finds a way back.
That leadership was not improvised: even without the armband, Montes is the type to raise his voice in the dressing room and correct positioning from the pitch, a trait clear from the moment he captained Mexico in the tournament opener. In Europe he has had to adapt to very different styles — Espanyol’s Spanish touch, Almería’s physical intensity, Lokomotiv’s Russian rigor — and he has taken something from each stop to sharpen his reading of the game.
Tonight, in the round of 16 against England at the Azteca, he is again the starting centre-back in the biggest match he has played for the national team, with the added responsibility of marshalling a back line that has yet to concede a single goal in the tournament. Few defenders better embody the idea that character, more than talent, is what sustains a long career.
